Didim - beach resort not yet occupied by mass tourism

Didim Altinkum region informationThe rapidly growing town of Didim is a beach resort not yet occupied by mass tourism. It offers an excellent opportunity to experience local Turkish atmosphere and enjoy the renowned Turkish hospitality. Didim is well known for it's historical sites (Didyma and Apollo temple) and beautiful golden sand beaches. It is a relaxing holiday resort for those who enjoy fishing, trekking, hunting, history, sea, sun and nature.

Didim is shaped as a peninsula surrounding Mugla on the east coast with the huge inlet of Akbuk town, the Aegean sea on the west and east coast and Lake Bafa together with the Menderes River on the northern coast

Didim has a coast of 53 km in total full of bays and coves. Almost all the bays have sandy beaches and allow people to sunbathe and swim freely. Among these bays, the most important one is ofcourse Altinkum (Golden Sand), an excellent resort for those who seek sea, sun and aquatics. You can have a sun bath on the golden sandy beaches, participate in aquatics in the coves where any kinds of watersports can be performed.

Didim has the best of both worlds; sea and sun with endless golden beaches on one side and historical and artistic wonders and stunning nature on the other.

Altinkum lies on the western, Aegean, coast of Turkey. The climate is typically Mediterranean, ranging from around 13-15ºC in winter to upwards of 35ºC in summer. Turkey’s coastal waters gave us the word ‘Turquoise’ for their glorious colour, and as if that wasn’t enough, Altinkum translates as ‘Golden Sands’.

Furthermore, a happening harbor, the Dolphin square and the numerous bars take care of your nocturnal entertainment.

But before you hit the pubs and the clubs you have to take care of your appetite, which is gains momentum after a day at the beach. All the eateries serve delicious traditional Turkish meals at a reasonable price, while some even serve European dishes. The services at these places are impeccable and their hospitality is what stays back in your memory of Altinkum.

Didim Altinkum region informationAltinkum is a beach resort slowly gaining popularity and is only a 20 minutes walk from Didim. However, if you are not too fond of walking you can still reach Altinkum by availing the Dolmus’ along the main Ataturk-Bulvari road. Located between Bodrum and Kusadasi, Altinkum is truly growing up to be a hub of affairs and its friendly locals and their laid back lifestyle is a major pull for tourists.
If seeing is believing then you should see Altinkum otherwise you might not take the word ‘like paradise’ seriously. Golden sands, which is also the meaning of Altinkum, and turquoise blue water is the main reason it is considered as one of the best beaches along the Aegean. However apart from the beach the Adaland aqua park, Altinkum aqua park, Ephesus-roman ruins, and 5 island boat trip are the other activities you can indulge in.

The ancient city of Didim also known as Didyma is situated by the beautiful Aegean coast. Sheltered by gentle sloping hills, this beautiful seaside resort is only 75 kms from Kusadasi. According to a legend, the name Didim comes from the word "Didyma," that means "twin". It refers to the twin God and Goddess, Apollo and Artemis, who were supposedly born here. A mythological status to back the natural beauty of golden sandy beaches make your time spent in Didim to say the least, explosive. It is a blend of high adventure and complete relaxation, of the ancient world mysticism and the modern world enticement.

The subtly exciting atmosphere of Didim is almost contagious and once you get there you tend to soak in its slack lifestyle and laid back attitude together with the sun and the sea.

As Altinkum is so well-situated in the 1980s people from large cities around Turkey, especially Ankara, began to buy holiday homes, apartments, and villas in the area. Most of these were built as cooperative housing projects with private beaches. The attraction of the area is proved by the number of Ankara families that have now been going to Altinkum for two or more generations, and even today you will see many cars with Ankara (06) numberplates in Altinkum in summertime. Property values are now rising dramatically and the building boom continues as foreign buyers, especially the families of Turks living and working in Europe, follow their lead. The growth of Altinkum in the 1980s was enhanced with the building of hotels to accommodate visitors, originally from Britain but now from Turkey itself, on cheap package holidays. Since about 2001 British people have begun to buy holiday homes in Altinkum, establishing themselves as a visible community of many thousands, to the extent that utility bills in the district are now printed in English as well as Turkish. You will see the Union Jack and other British flags all around Altinkum, especially in the bars.

Altinkum is also close to a number of other ancient towns and natural wonders: Lake Bafa national park is nearby, along with the Buyuk Menderes River and historic sites such as Miletos and Priene.

In the evenings most people try to find somewhere quiet to sit by the sea and look at the lights of other towns across the water, but if you are of a more energetic nature Altinkum has two or three discotheques, and a number of smaller bars and clubs, some with live music, mostly Turku (Turkish folk music). However Altinkum is really a quiet family resort with great coastline, and if it's nightlife you are looking for you would be better off in Bodrum. Summer in Altinkum involves your father sitting on the balcony drinking raki while you and your friends play volleyball, sit on the beach, or wander along the seafront munching sunflower seeds and spitting out the husks, while groups of boys will be following girls around.

The construction of the new 27 million GBP Altinkum D Marina is expected to encourage further tourism and rising property prices in the area. Development of the third beach area in Altinkum has already begun with an expected completion date of 2009.

  Beautiful Climate Around The Year

A lot of Europeans complain that they don't see the sun very much in their hometowns. Northern Europe is usually very cold, and Europe in general is cloudy and rainy most of the time. That is not the case in the Mediterranean Climate. Even though Altinkum and around experiences very cold weather, is is usually short and easy to handle. Most winter months are very sunny and clear. Locals actually like winter time weather more than the summer months's weather. This clear weather combined with crystal clear mediterranean sea makes an amazing combination.

You don't really need a car to go around around Altinkum as you do in big cities. Everything is almost at walking distance. That is a plus when you compare it to having to go everywhere in a car event to grocery shopping. In developed countries, because of value and importance of time, and city planning; you must drive to most places. That prevents you from walking, which is a basic essential workout that human body needs. You will be doing a lot of walking, biking if you live in this beautiful mediterranean town. Altinkum and its environment is also very suitable for basic sports and work out. Go jogging starting from Altinkum Marina till the end of Second Beach. A very scenic route only reserved for pedestrieand along the beach. All exercise benefits combined with daily fresh vegetables, fruits, olive oil, fresh air and nice weather, relaxed days with happy people around you gives your life and health a lift up.
